Private Full Day Tomar Tour

Tour Description

Tour Activity Level: 2

The city of great cultural and artistic wealth invites you for a full day of exploration.

Tomar, otherwise known as Thomar in English, is a laid-back charming city in the heart of Portugal. Characterized by its square mosaic tile designs, narrow cobblestone streets and iconic architecture, this “living museum” of a town will surely leave every visitor breathless with its unique charm.

Starting off with the Convent of Christ, a former Catholic convent founded by the Templar Knights in the year 1118. The Castle of the convent was built in the year 1160, and the entire sanctuary (castle, church and cloisters) are designed in Romanesque, Gothic, Manueline and Renaissance architectural styles.

The other half of your day in Tomar will be spent exploring an iconic Jewish landmark: The Synagogue of Tomar. This well-preserved medieval structure is one of two present pre-expulsion synagogues in Portugal. Dating back to the mid 1400s, when Jews made up 40% of Tomar’s population back then; the city also has a Jewish Quarter that grew due to the expulsion of Jews from Spain, and their eventual settlement in Portugal’s Tomar. The synagogue itself is known for its whitewashed exterior, and the fact that it is not easily distinguishable as a synagogue or religious building from first glance. Bits of history behind this place will surely get you excited to learn and discover more about the richness of Portuguese culture.

Speaking of rich, you’ll also find yourself enjoying the rich flavors of a classic Portuguese lunch halfway through this tour.
